Ok, I have a problem with this for a couple of reasons:
1. Is "That's so gay" really the wittiest retort this girl could come up with? She's making the rest of us look bad.
2. Keeping in mind the fact that I love, love, love the gays: you could argue that this dumb girl had no true idea what she was saying. I hear "That's retarded" all the time, and people look shocked when I'm call them on it.
3. How many of the kids who were teasing this girl about being Mormon got a disciplinary note in their file? HMMMMM?!?!?!?
4. Why are her parents asking for "damages?" Just sue for the note to be removed and be done. Don't try to make a dime off this.

I agree with that. While I consider myself to be reasonably open minded on most topics and often try my hardest to see all sides of things before forming an opinion I admit that this one is a bit hard for me. The news story mentions the "ten wives" thing rather haphazardly and in sort of a matter-of-fact sense. The girl probably should not have said what she said and (political/religious views aside) what she was asked and had insinuated upon her was just as bad, if not worse, than what she said back. Yet no mention of punishment or offence for those teasing her in the first place. I could be wrong, of course, but the political correctness slippery slide should probably apply in her case as well.
"Political correctness" can be a slippery slope. I agree, it was a dumb thing to say, but I would argue that everyone will say something stupid if you wait long enough.
Just another thought: This whole thing is about tolerance.
"In an intelligent conversation, tolerance should expected by more than just the person speaking" (Loki chapter 4 verse 6)
